Some Stanley accommodation providers will allow camping in their gardens with access to bathroom facilities.
Camping elsewhere in the Falkland Islands is generally a "wilderness" experience but a fantastic one nevertheless. There are no designated campsites or camping facilities but many locations around the Islands make idyllic camping spots with access to fresh water from local streams. Although water is generally very clean it is wise to treat supplies before drinking. The experience is truly tranquil, often with stunning views, magnificent night-time skies and only the local wildlife for company.
The area outside of Stanley is known as "Camp", a word derived from the gaucho "campo" meaning countryside. All visitors to "Camp" need to be aware of and follow the Countryside Code. Most land is privately owned and, as stated in the Code, it is essential to seek permission before entry. This does not include driving through land on Government roads.
Agreement must be sought from the land owner in advance and clarification given of the campers' intentions, particularly with regard to cooking arrangements. A stove must be used and supervised at all times, never an open fire. FIGAS restrict the carriage of fuels so it is important to check the local airline regulations and plan well ahead if travelling away from the mainland islands. Most land owners are willing to allow camping though some may charge a small fee. It is sometimes possible to camp in settlement areas with limited use of facilities. Contact the Falkland Islands Tourist Board for a list of land owners.
Camping equipment needs to be sturdy as winds can be very strong at times. It is advisable to be equipped with clothing and equipment suitable for 3-to-4-season usage. For hiking, boots with good ankle support are essential to cope with the terrain and a layering system of clothing including high quality waterproofs is recommended to account for rapidly changing weather conditions. High factor sunscreen is suggested. 1:50,000 maps of the Falkland Islands can be obtained from the museum.
