Food & Eating Out

Falklands’ hosts pride themselves in serving locally produced foods including home-made cakes and biscuits for the traditional "smoko"; with home-grown vegetables and meat reared on the farm or locally caught fish at meal times.

In Stanley the menus available at some 15 establishments offer a wide range of food from gourmet to home style cooking as well as standard pub food, popular the world over. There is something to suit all tastes, price ranges and the time you have available.

The local seafood is a firm favourite with Falkland Islands residents and visitors alike. Mussels, oysters, scallops and crab as well as local sea trout and Atlantic Rock Cod (locally called mullet) are served in most restaurants while some of the smaller cafes and pubs offer the familiar fayre of fish and chips during the day. A visit to the Falklands would not be complete without sampling the delights of the local squid caught in deep waters, or the Patagonian toothfish (Mero).

The Falklands are renowned for the quality of the lamb, mutton and beef all of which is ranched on the wide plains of the Islands. Upland Goose paté is also a local speciality and the unique flavour of the Diddle-dee Berry or Teaberry should be experienced if possible.

Most establishments stock a good choice of wines and vegetarian options are offered at many. Eating out, whether in Stanley, at a Lodge or in the home of an Islander in the Camp, is sure to be a pleasure you will want to repeat.
