France's Falklands Forays

Gypy Cove and Magellanic penguins

Profile

Graham France is a long-term Falklands resident and a Falkland Islands Tourist Board accredited Tour Guide with many seasons of experience. Graham offers the following tours based around Stanley and surrounds:

Stanley Highlights

  • Christ Church Cathedral - built over a century ago, Graham isthe immediate past Rector's Warden at the Cathedral, and has an excellent internal knowledge of the Cathedral and its role throughout history.
  • Mike Butcher's outdoor whaling museum - this private collection features skeletons and skulls of these mighty marine mammals, as well as the harpoon guns used to hunt them to near extinction.
  • The Lady Elizabeth wreck - the tour offers close-up views of this beached iron-hulled tall ship. The 'Lady Liz' was built in Sunderland in 1879, and is still complete with masts and cross trees.
  • Gypsy Cove - a picturesque site home to Stanley's nearest colony of Magellanic penguins - the only local species to nest underground. Gypsy Cove is also home to rock cormorants, night herons and various other small-bird species.

Other Falklands highlights

  • Stanley Golf Course - Graham (former Club captain) can arrange visits to what is thought to be one of the world's most southerly links golf courses in the world, just 5 minutes from the centre of Stanley.
  • Stone runs - Just a few miles outside Stanley by car, Graham offers tours to see stone runs. These astonishing geological formations consist of rivers of stone which flow from mountain summits across valley floors (a process thought to be unique to the Falklands).
