Tony Smith is the owner/operator of Discovery Falklands, with more than 20 years experience guiding tourists, television crews, photographers, battlefield enthusiasts, and 1982 veterans to prime wildlife and historical sites around the Falklands (registered since 1992).
Mt Harriet, Two Sisters, Longdon, Tumbledown, William and Wireless Ridge, now famous sites where the final battles were fought by British Forces on the nights of June 11th and 13th as part of their combined operation to recover the Falklands, after they had been forcefully occupied by Argentine troops on April 2nd 1982.
Half day tours of 3-4 hours are available or, where more detail is requested, a full day of 6-8 hours is also offered to the these sites as well as Fitzroy, Darwin , Goose Green and San Carlos where the main British landings were made on May 21st 1982.
Various Aircraft crash sites can also be included or indeed visited on an individual tour.
These are mostly situated in the Southern region of East Falkland known as Lafonia.
The extreme South of East Falkland has both natural beauty and an abundance of wildlife; including Gentoo & Magellanic penguins, Sea Lions, ducks and wading birds - this is a location where unusual birds are often spotted. As well as wildlife you will experience beautiful, white sand beaches and some of the nicest wildflowers and plants in the Falklands. Due to the distance from Stanley it is usually necessary to stay overnight to make a visit to Bull Point worthwhile. Contact Tony directly for full details.
This is a very scenic part of the North Coast where you can see a thousand plus Rockhopper Penguins, also usually small numbers of Macaroni Penguins and Sea Lions. On windy days Albatross and other sea birds swoop offshore. This area is part of Salvador Farm owned and run by five generations of the Pitaluga family.
The Northern most point of East Falkland boasts spectacular views and varied wildlife, including a breeding colony of Sea Lions, Gentoo and Magellanic penguins as well as many ducks, wading birds and Black Necked Swans on the aptly named Swan Pond.
Both of these sites are situated within short driving distance of Stanley and offer easy access to Magellanic Penguins, Night Herons and Porpoises. Visit the old lighthouse at Cape Pembroke, a superb area for viewing sea birds set along a rugged coastline with beautiful white sand beaches.
An area of great historical interest, both from the early period of settlement in the Falklands until more recently when British Paratroopers fought the first and longest battle here during the 1982 Conflict with Argentina.
Memorials for British soldiers who fell in this battle can be seen here and nearby an Argentine cemetery, as well as various positions over the large expanse of ground where the battle was fought.
Goose Green is also the second largest sheep farm on the Islands, covering almost 300,00acres with approximately 70,000 sheep.
This is another different but equally interesting part of the northern coastline of East Falkland where you can see small numbers of Sea Lions in a photographic location. There are also Gentoo & Magellanic penguins, many small birds and ducks, and occasionally birds of prey. This driving tour takes a circular route from the Elephant Beach farm, which can also be visited if desired.
Port Louis is an area of great historical interest, offering a fascinating number of stories from its earliest settlement in 1764 onwards. French, Spanish and British settlements all existed here at one time, and the various remains can still be seen from each of these periods.
This location was chosen for the main landings of British troops on May 21st 1982 and for the British Military Cemetery which overlooks the now peaceful waters.
A small but interesting museum can be visited here as well as 2 Para positions on Sussex Mountains.
The main attraction at Volunteer Point is the King Penguin colony which resides there throughout the year; Gentoo & Magellanic penguins also breed here. This site is usually only accessible from early November until late March.
For clients planning to stay more than one week in the Falklands it is now possible to offer either a 4 or 7 day package expedition to West Falkland using the recently established ferry service from New Haven to Port Howard.
If none of the above tours are quite what you are looking for contact Tony directly to organise a package to meet your specific needs.
