George, Barren and Speedwell Island group lie on the south eastern side of east Falkland Islands.
The group were purchased by Chris and Lindsey May in 2001. The groups' primary income is derived from agriculture. The islands run 5,300 sheep to produce fine wool and prime lamb for export to Europe. The May's are conservationists and the group is currently in transition to being certified organic. The islands are a wildlife hotspot due in part to the group being rodent free. 42 species of bird inhabit these islands with many ground nesters making them a destination not to be missed by bird/wildlife enthusiasts.
On a typical visit to Barren Island you can expect to see Southern Sea Lion, breeding Elephant seal, Gentoo and Magallanic Penguins. Included in the list of 42 are the rare and endangered Striated Cara Cara, Tussac birds, the elusive Cobbs wren and the large, majestic Southern Giant Petrol and chicks.
George Island offers an insight into life on an isolated, remote island. To enrich this experience Chris your host will do a shearing demonstration followed by a question and answer session on agriculture in the Falklands. This will be followed by a sheep dog trialling exhibition. This island also offers opportunities for short leisurely walks. Areas of interest being the native tussac grass regeneration plantation. Peale's dolphins in Elephant Bay and relaxing strolls, beach combing or still more bird spotting. To top of this relaxing informative visit pop into the house and enjoy a cup of tea and sample the large variety of home baked cookies with your host Lindsey.
The Barren island experience is approximately a 3 km easy walk taking approximately three and a half hours. A new landing stage for zodiacs has alleviated the need for wet landings.
George Island has a deep water jetty allowing the use of tenders and for the first time allowing visits from larger vessels. Zodiacs will continue to land to the east of the jetty, a wet landing in a sand bay. Anchorage is very sheltered at both islands other than from the north through to the east.
To get the best from this location a whole day visit is recommended. However a half day option is available. Why not complement a wildlife visit to a neighbouring island with a farm/wildlife visit to George Island?
