Land Transport

The road network in the Islands is limited but expanding. Stanley roads are metalled, as is some of the Stanley-Mount Pleasant road. All-weather graded tracks link Mount Pleasant with Goose Green and Stanley with Port Louis, Estancia, Salvador and various settlements in the north of East Falkland as far as Port San Carlos. In West Falkland similar tracks link Port Howard, Chartres, Hill Cove, Roy Cove and Fox Bay. Other tracks are traditional routes overland, which demand expertise and experience of what can be rough and boggy ground conditions. Lodges at Port Howard, Pebble Island, Darwin and Sea Lion Island are equipped with 4WD vehicles for the transportation of clients.

Air Transport

Aircraft are more commonly used by Islanders and visitors for longer distances. The Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS), tel: ++(500) 27219, email: fwallace@figas.gov.fk operates Britten Norman Islander aircraft from its base at Stanley airport. At other points, the aircraft land on grass strips or beaches. Capacity of the Islander is 8 passengers plus the pilot but the majority of strips can only accept a reduced payload. For safety reasons, luggage is limited to 30lb (14kg) per passenger.

There are no fixed schedules; flights are arranged on a day-by-day basis subject to demand and operate to all accessible parts of the Islands.

Note: Passengers arriving in the Islands on the LAN flight can fly FIGAS directly from Mount Pleasant Airport to either Port Howard or Pebble Island on West Falkland, provided they have pre-booked either directly with FIGAS or with local travel agencies. This is particularly recommended for visitors staying in the Falklands for only one week who want to maximise their wildlife viewing opportunities. Transport can also be provided from Mount Pleasant Airport to and from Darwin House Lodge.
