New Island_Falkland Islands

For decades New Island has been devoted to wildlife and environmental conservation and research. It is Falklands Conservation’s largest site (following the 2020 merger of Falklands Conservation and the New Island Conservation Trust).

Located in the far west of the Falklands’ archipelago, New Island’s stunning scenery is matched by an extraordinary range of wildlife, including fur seals. It is an Important Bird Area with species including Black-browed albatross, Thin-billed prions, Gentoo, Magellanic and Rockhopper penguins, King cormorants, Striated caracaras and Peregrine falcons. The terrain is varied with spectacular cliffs, white sand beaches and secret coves, rugged hills and some small open plains. The remains of the Falkland’s only land-based whaling station are in the main harbour and there is a small museum in the settlement.

Day-to-day activities at New Island are overseen by the New Island wardens, who will be able to assist you with any questions you might have prior to a visit. Please email the wardens to book self-catering accommodation on the island.

Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS) flights to New Islands are limited to 3 adults or equivalent due to the airstrip limitations. Weather conditions can sometimes prevent landings to New Island for several days. We therefore recommend a minimum of 3 nights’ stay due to logistical difficulties, unfortunately 1 night stays cannot be accepted. For this reason we currently only accept bookings from Falkland Island residents or from scientists, film crews and overseas tourists who will be spending several weeks in the Falkland Islands and whose schedule is sufficiently flexible to allow for possible delays. Give yourself plenty of travel leeway, for arrival and departure, particularly if you are to connect with onward international flights.

Flights to/from New Island may be postponed or otherwise altered at short notice. New Island cannot accept responsibility for delays & any consequent costs, howsoever caused. Any guests whose departure is delayed will be charged for additional nights at the set rates.

The airstrip limitations mean there are complications for larger groups wishing to visit New Island, please discuss logistics with the wardens when making a booking.

Due to the weight restrictions on the New Island airstrip it is important that FIGAS luggage allowance is adhered to or that FIGAS is contacted in advance of any excess luggage.

A small selection of ready-made meals and basic food items are available in the New Island store to assist with weight restrictions on FIGAS. Please contact the wardens for a stock list to assist with your planning. However, you will need to bring the majority of your food with you, including fresh vegetables / fruit and alcohol.

Wi-Fi cards are available to purchase or if you have a Sure Broadband package you can log on with this. Please note the Wi-Fi hotspot is located in the Field Station, if you are staying in other accommodation you can access it by sitting outside or on request inside of the Field Station for short periods at reasonable times of the day. Requests are at the discretion of the wardens and guests staying in the Field Station. There is no mobile/cell coverage on New Island.
