About

Welcome to Owl Tours and Crafts

About Us ( Eileen & Colin Davies)

My husband, Colin and I have lived in the Falkland Islands since 1982 and 1985, respectively, and absolutely love it. We hope that our enthusiasm for everything Falklands- its magnigicent wildlife, fascinating history and unique culture- are encaptualted in our tours and that by the time you depart the Islands, they have captured your hearts too!

Both Colin and I are accredited and experienced tour guides, having conducted both walking and 4x4 tours for several years. I have also worked for several years as a casual assistant at the Historic Dockyard Museum in Stanley, which has given me the opportunity to meet many fascinating people from all over the world and enhanced my knowledge and interest of local history.

We offer a wide range of tours, which we hope will appeal to people of all interests but are also happy to tailor our tours to the specific needs and interests of our clients, wherever possible, as we aim to offer enjoyment and excellent value for money.

We aim to provide the personal touch by sharing personal anecdotes and stories of our life in the Falklands and love to welcome visitors into our homes in both Stanley and Darwin for traditional Falklands' "smoko" (tea/coffee and cake).

Our country home across the bay from Darwin settlement is named "The Owls" after the barn owls which nest in the gorse hedges surrounding our property. The original part of the house dates back to 1868 and we have an amazing variety of birdlife, which inspires me to needlefelt the local birds, and fauna, including the rare yellow pale maiden and Gaudichaud's orchid. If you would like to try your hand at local crafts, we offer full day workshops in needle-felting and leatherwork, including lunch, at our Darwin home.

Colin, a teacher and talented self-taught leatherworker and woodworker, is also one of the few remaining peat cutters in the Islands, still cutting by hand to fuel our rayburns in both Stanley and Darwin. There is nothing to beat the taste of Falklands' mutton roasted slowly overnight in a peat fuelled rayburn! Depending on the tour you choose, you may have the opportunity to watch Colin cutting peat and may also have a go yourself if you feel inclined. It's harder than it looks!

We look forward to meeting you!
