Travel by Sea
Workboat Services Ltd operates the mv Concordia Bay, the inter-island ferry service between New Haven on East Falkland and Port Howard on West Falkland. This is a great way to travel if circumstances permit, and very cost-effective for a group. Marine mammals are frequently observed from the decks, and the sight of nearing land, particularly passing through the ‘narrows’ into Port Howard, is quite spectacular. The voyage lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Short sightseeing tours (generally 1-3 hours) of Stanley Harbour, Port William, and the surrounding area are available for groups, from various companies that operate launches, where they will get the chance to experience the views from the sea, which highlight the colourful nature of our capital, some of the white sandy beaches, the rugged, picturesque coastline, and the rich marine life.
Travel must be booked in advance for both foot and vehicle passengers. The service runs several times a week, but the vessel is also used to transport supplies around the Islands, thus there are periods in which the ferry is unavailable. Opportunities to travel on boats around the Islands are limited, but some fantastic day trips are available, for example, to Kidney Island from Stanley. Accommodation providers and the Jetty Visitor Centre are the best sources of information to account for weather conditions and any other circumstances that may affect travel.
Most expedition cruise vessels call in to locations with wildlife viewing opportunities, as well as the capital, Stanley. Larger ships usually call only at Stanley.
Private yachts are welcome in many places around the Islands with the landowners’ permission – sailors should consult the latest information available from the Falkland Islands Maritime Authority (FIMA).
