Originally built as a slaughterhouse and refrigeration plant for Falklands’ mutton but then closed when it proved to be economically unviable, the site was used as a field-hospital in the 1982 war between Britain and Argentina. Surgeon Commander Rick Jolly ran the unit which became known as “The Red and Green Life Machine” due to its success at treating casualties from both sides.  The remains of the buildings are located on Wreck Point Farm, opposite San Carlos on East Falkland, the site where British troops were landed.

Permission is needed to visit. Take a tour with a guide or contact the farm owner.
