From running to wilderness walking, diving to kayaking, the Falkland Islands have many experiences to tempt the active and adventurous traveller.

The adventure begins with travel around the archipelago. Islander aircraft transport locals and visitors alike to the grass and all-weather airstrips of small settlements and farms of West Falkland and the inhabited outer islands. Take your allocated seat, always with good views from a window, and prepare for the delights of the flight with glorious vistas over the land and sea.

Meeting and greeting you on landing will be your hosts and most likely an onward journey in a 4x4 vehicle. This is the mode of transport across vast tracts of land; the journey again an adventure in itself, to reach your destination and perhaps for day trips to remote locations.

Landscapes - stunning whites and greys

The white sand beaches, white grass plains, rocky peninsulas, hilltops and ridges are the perfect setting for land-based adventures.

Self-guided trails are developed for some locations around the Islands, in particular to explore the hills and shorelines surrounding the tiny capital, Stanley. Walk or run, find your own way, or consult our tour guides page to benefit from the experience of a local guide. Running events take place around the Islands – look at our events section for the latest information. Geocaching is also popular with many caches in the Stanley area. Caches are also laid at remote locations but please ensure you have land-owner permission, in advance, to seek them out.

Mountain biking is slowly growing in popularity. The windy climate creates challenging conditions, but the exhilaration and sense of achievement make the adventure worthwhile.

Climbing leads to some breath-taking views but is best undertaken with a local, experienced guide, nevertheless at almost untouched locations. The rock is a combination of sandstone and quartz.

Seascapes - sultry blues and greens

The shallow marine environment is probably the most diverse habitat of the Islands with many new species waiting to be discovered by those who venture underwater. Alternatively, over one hundred shipwrecks lie offshore. Marine mammals frequently enjoy interacting with divers as they explore the coastal environment.

Meanwhile at the ocean surface, watersports are described as ‘an adventure in magnificent settings’ by local enthusiasts and the Falklands’ beaches and coastline have barely been explored to date. There are no crowds and again, the water is often shared with marine mammals with seabirds to observe overhead. Sea kayaking is a great way to explore the pristine shores and when the wind is at a suitable setting, surfing, windsurfing and small boat sailing can be undertaken.
